General Palmer's Amber Lager

The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a thick offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is great. It has a very malty scent that boasts of crystal malts and a slight raisin aroma. It's dry and fruity with lager yeast scents. The taste is good. It has a grainy crystal and chocolate malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes dry and slightly fruity. There is a bit of malty sweetness here. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good amber lager. The other posts suggests that this is an inferior offering. I say the opposite. It has good malt character and is very drinkable.

If a brewpub has a lager on tap, I usually start with it to see how good the brewer actually is. To make a great tasting lager with no flaws is not easy and it is usually an indicator to me how good the rest of the beers are. Well this lager was lacking. Wierd musty grain aroma, no head after a rough pour, and tasted again of the wierd musty grain. Detected a huge amount of butteriness that just overwhelmed as it became warmer. A poor example of the style.

Nice color, deep amber, little foam, some lacing covered the sides of the glass and remained. The aroma was redolent of wood and the initial taste had a nice mild malt, dry, followed by a tart middle and slightly sour finish. Good carbonation. Not the best of Palmer's reportoire, but not too shabby.
