The transfer from a wax-sealed 33cl bottle to one of Landskron’s elegant tulip/thistles yields a barely translucent (i.e, nearly opaque) body topped by a half-inch tan head. The head retains its presence after settling, but with minimal cling. The smell is of dark chocolate and date, reminiscent of a Chunky candy bar.
On the palate, this beer presents delights and challenges that merit considerable contemplation. From a bed of doppelbock maltiness, there arises surprising tang. This culminates in an admirable and altogether enjoyable length of flavor that leads one to wonder, “am I drinking beer?” The question—that is, the taste—might prove unsettling to some, but I am rather taken by it, and aver that the brewer’s decision to age this concoction in moscatel barrels was well sound. Mouthfeel has a just-right amount of prickliness. A well thought-out beer.
