On tap the brewpub yesterday.
The beer pours a brownish amber color with pretty decent head retention and lacing. This beer is a bit lighter in color than what I typically encounter in a doppelbock. On the nose I pick p considerable brown sugar, along with some vanilla and light chocolate. On the palate, the brown sugar and vanilla really seem to dominate in this fairly sweet beer. It's OK, but this is not what I typically expect to find in a doppelbock. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and while the beer delivers plenty of flavor, the sweetness really wears on you after a bit. Alcohol is fairly well integrated into the flavor profile I guess (it's pretty hard to pick up anything over the brown sugar and vanilla flavor), but given the amount of sweetness in this beer, I didn't feel drinkability was this beer's strong suit.
Mehhh. Not awful by any means, but considering the brewer (the lagers I've had from Wayfinder up until now have all been quite good), I was a bit disappointed by this effort. This is a beer I would ever order again.
