Can purchased at a Lidl in Porto, Portugal. Best before: 02/02/17. Lidl exclusive. Not to be confused with the version(s) of Argus brewed in other countries for other Lidl brand owners.
A: The thin off-white head fizzles out in under a minute, leaving no lacing. Body colour is a dull yellow-copper.
Sm: Grainy, which I'll take over overly malty in a budget supermarket brand lager any day of the week. A blip of pilsner malts and faint grassiness.
Suggests cheap malt extract was used. Aromatic intensity is somewhat low.
T: Malt extract. Faint graininess.
Has a cheap simple taste, lacking any subtlety or intricacy of flavour whatsoever. Very shallow, and ultimately too sweet. There's zero hop presence.
Mf: Smooth, wet, a bit too thin (and even slightly syrupy) for a pale lager, overcarbonated (though not sharply so), and largely unrefreshing. Light to medium-bodied.
O: It's not watery or metallic, so that's a plus. Drinkable but forgettable, Argus will meet the low expectations of its target demographic - but that doesn't make it worth seeking out for discerning drinkers. A good student beer, and far from the worst swill available in supermarkets across Europe. Pretty neutral in taste for what it is.
D (2.11) / NOT RECOMMENDED
