Fürst Wallerstein Brauhaus "Hell"
,5l brown glass bottle coded "MHB 07.01.18" sampled on 09.18.17

This isn't my first stop at the Fürst Wallerstein well, nor will it be my last. When I can find it the label makes it stand out on the shelf and I know I've found something I can trust. It's a clear golden beneath a full head of white foam that holds quite well and leaves some very decent lacing about the glass. The aroma is of grainy malt that doesn't come across as specifically Pilsner malt, but definitely includes a fair amount of it. There are also some very grassy, herbal, and lightly floral hops to round it out. The flavor follows with the same grainy maltiness but there's even more hops. It's grassy, herbal, floral, citrusy with lemon, a hint pine-like, and earthy. That's not to say that it's a hop bomb because it's far from that, but the hops are noticeable whereas in most helles they're a little more restrained. A median bitterness balances it and brings it to a fairly short, dry finish. In the mouth it's medium-bodied and crisp. Nicely rounded and balanced.

Had on tap. Clear golden pour with a big white head, moderate lacing. Aromas of biscuit, honey, white bread and lager malt. Taste has great malt depth with strong honey and biscuit, white bread and german yeast meet before the lightly grassy hops finish. Feel is lighter but not thinner for style, very malt forward in feel, has decent carbonation. Absolutely perfect with german food and on hot days

From the stubby bottle, it pours a clear yellow amber with a modest white head, soon diminishing to a thin layer. In the nose, it is light citrus and malt. In the mouth, it is malt forward. Nice!

2025 update: yum!

This is a wonderful Helles, and one of the best I had so far.
