Drank from a can purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip
Most of Spanish Marie’s beers have labels that look like they were drawn for children, but this one really brings things to another level. As for the beer, it poured a cloudy, blush color that was reminiscent of ruby red grapefruit juice. A thin, frothy, bright white cap topped the liquid, but it quickly broke apart. There was no lacing whatsoever.
The aroma was interesting. It was super fruity and sweet. Very candy like. Strawberry dominated. Fragrant vanilla and marshmallow notes also came through strong. Watermelon and raspberry were apparent as well. Some boysenberry ice cream was detectable too. Subtle cherry notes appeared as the beer sat.
The flavor profile followed the nose but was a bit more tart and tangy. Raspberry led things off. Strawberry was noticeable as well. Like the nose, quite sweet overall but also somewhat tart. Creamy vanilla notes appeared in the center. Bit of lemony tartness too. Boysenberry ice cream came through on the back end and carried into the finish. Sweet-tart berry notes lingered after the swallow.
The mouthfeel was somewhat disappointing. It was medium-thin in body and lacking in carbonation to the point of almost seeming flat.
With its thinner body and super sweet nose and flavor profile, this Spanish Marie x Mortalis fruited sour collaboration more closely resembled your typical Spanish Marie beer than the latter. While it seemed to achieve its objective, it is definitely not something I would choose to drink again.
