Had it on tap at Fifth Hammer Brewing tap room.
It poured the darkest possible amber color, perhaps more dark brown than anything, redolent of of a brown ale more than an amber. A moderate layer of a sudsy off white head dissipates and leaves a thin ring.
The aroma is at first malt forward, toasty and with hints of caramel. Soon, the spice from the rye emerges, as does the pine hops.
The taste features rye that adds considerable spice. A considerable hops profile adds a significant bitterness and dryness in the finish. Hints of tobacco and smoked malt add to a slightly burnt malt feel.
Medium bodied, dry, spicy and bitter. A full and dense malt texture adds complexity. Yet, it is easy to drink.
An interesting representation of the style.
