Picked up a 4 pack from Fifth Hammer Brewing. Poured a 16oz can into a glass. The appearance is hazy golden orange with a moderate sudsy head. Good retention throughout as well as a trail of sticky Saturn ring like lacing.
In the nose there is a combination of fruit and dank herbal hops. Notes of apricot, melon, peach, grapefruit pith and lemon peel. The fruity aromas interplay nicely with the earthy smell of pine and grass that begin to develop. Soon, the herbal hops begin to dominate, and nearly overpower with their pungent fragrance, whilst being held in check by the citric acidity. There is even a catty and musky aroma. Overall, a bold and complex smelling IPA.
The taste is an amazing confluence of citrus, stone fruits and semi aggressively hopped pine. In some ways it reminds me of a more subdued version of Heady Topper. There is a flavor base of grapefruit pulp, accompanied by apricot, peach, berries, guava and passion fruit. These flavors are balanced by a prickly mouthfeel laden with pine and grass. The finish is wonderfully resiny and dry, with a lingering bitterness.
Medium bodied, moderately to gently carbonated and remarkably drinkable for a Dipa. The alcohol was very well masked. This had all qualities of what a great DIPA should be. My favorite beer from Fifth Hammer so far! More people should know about this brewery!
