All hail the lord Duke Vernon, the patron saint of quality malt! This LIC themed libation is a throwback to the great stouts of days past and boy does it deliver! Roasty and deep, with complex chocolate notes, a nice dry finish and a smooth drinkability, this is a true brewer's stout.

Appearance: Poured from a very cold 16-ounce aluminum can into a room temperature goblet glass. The can has a peel-and-stick label with what the bartender insisted was a local artist's rendering of a Vernon Boulevard intersection. The dimly lit bar intensified the darkness of the beer, which appeared black even though it was actually a very dark brown . There was some dark brown foam initially but it quickly reduced itself to a thin outer ring with some splotches on the surface.
Aroma: Huge notes of milk chocolate backed up by coffee and hazelnut.
Taste: Bitter chocolate with bitter coffee. The hazelnut sweetness on the nose is either lost on the tongue or overpowered by the bitterness.
Feel: Thin and watery. Low carbonation.
Overall: Whether it's imbalanced or overly complex, it's not exactly where it needs to be; but it's so close. The beer did mellow itself out with some warmth though.
Pairing: The cream in the creamed spinach side of a dry aged New York strip steak meal helped add some much needed depth to the feel of the beer.
