This is a collaboration with City Acre. A Scotch Ale with coffee.
A: Pours a dark brown, nearly black color. A two finger tan head rises with good retention and lace left behind.
S: Coffee is certainly up front, though that quickly gives way to toasted malts. Some dark fruits as well. A good and interesting mix.
T: Again, coffee up front. Then the malt character kicks in. Which is very good. Toasted, caramel/toffee sweetness. Chocolate and dark fruits. More coffee towards the finish. I like it, and the coffee does work. Though would love to see what the base Scotch Ale is without the coffee.
M/O: A full body, moderate carbonation. After a quick effervescent snap, this becomes very smooth. I have come back to this a few times since it was released. So it is good and interesting, if not exactly what I am looking for in the style.
A well done and interesting attempt. The coffee works, but I am an ultra traditionalist, and would have loved to have just the base beer. Definitely give it a go if at the brewery, as it is good.
