The Stages of Grief Series
A Farmhouse Session IPA
5.5% abv

100% Local Malt / 59% Local Hops / 41% German Hops

Back in 2016, we boldly stated that we would never brew an IPA. Ever. Six years later, we are working through the Five Stages of Grief as we come to terms with never saying never again.

Each of the five IPAs in this new series explores a different approach to craft beer’s most popular beer style and is inspired by each of the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Depression, Bargaining and Acceptance. If you imagine how those words might inform a sub-style of IPA or ingredient choices, you will be on the right track of what else to expect from this series…

===

Denial is what happens when you just cannot let go of something. In the case of this Farmhouse Session IPA (Whatever that means! Clearly someone is in denial here!), it is lower strength saisons and farmhouse ales that we just cannot let go of. Denial combines local malt, local and modern aroma hops, a favorite farmhouse yeast and open fermentation for a fruity, funky trip back to the future. In the glass, it drinks similarly to a modern hazy, juicy pale ale or IPA, though a bit drier in the finish and with a more sessionable ABV percentage.

Brewed with Skagit Valley barley and wheat malts; local Magnum, Cashmere and Comet hops from Bredenhof Hop Farms in Chilliwack, BC; German Hallertau Blanc and Huell Melon hops; and Norwegian farmhouse yeast.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a lightly hazy, medium golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of pale malt, saison style yeast, citrus and grassy hops, lemon, apple and hay with a little farmhouse funk. Flavor is pale and grainy malt, grassy and mildly citrus hops, saison yeast, lemon, light mixed stone fruit and light farmhouse funk. Moderate hop bitterness in the finish, not quite up to IPA level. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I was surprised to see this on the shelf a few weeks after reviewing the second one in this series (Anger). Like that one, this has some solid farmhouse character that I'd expect from this brewery. Since the alpha bitterness level is modest (but satisfactory), I'd say this is closer to a hopped saison than an IPA, although there is more pale malt body to the malt than a saison would have. A quite interesting start to this series of IPAs from a brewery that is known for other styles. I'm happy with the saison / IPA fusion style and look forward to future offerings.

16oz can (no date) poured into 14oz teku. Poured a fully murky dark orange color with 2/3 inch of white head that had good retention and very light lacing.

The aroma was fruit forward, a combination of the hops and yeast used. soft and earthy grains provided a strong base.

Fairly similar on the tongue with the grain, yeast and hops combining nicely.

The body was medium, smooth, and had a medium finish.

Drinkability was good, an easily quaffable brew.

Overall, a pretty nice brew. Worth trying if you see it.
