Got this at the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled in 2020

Barleywine aged in bourbon and maple syrup barrels
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium, foamy looking, fizzy, off-white head with decent retention. Head quickly crackles away to a faint wisp and ring. Clear ruby red in color with higher levels of carbonation for the style. Swirly wisp and a ring remains leaving solid lacing on the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Bold nose of bourbon, oak, caramel and toffee aromas, some nice maple notes and sugary bubble gum on the nose. Nice stuff.
TASTE: Lots of sweet maple syrup up front, with caramel, toffee, butterscotch, some bourbon and oak as well, with a good hit of booze at the swallow. Bold finish with sweet maple pancakes all over the place, some caramel and butterscotch, bourbon notes, as well as some booze linger on the palate. This is very maple syrup heavy, which is quite decadent. Lovely.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, a bit foamy, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is a really nice, maple forward barleywine. The bourbon barrels do the trick here too, but the sweet, pancake maple syrup is really what steals the show. The look is a little below par, but otherwise, this is well done all around and definitely something worth checking out if you’re a fan of the style. Cheers!
