1L howler from the brew-pub, they of the not-labeling their takeout bottles. #doihavetofuckinglookatuntappdagain

This beer pours a clear, dark copper amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly creamy off-white head, which leaves some stellar tree top canopy lace around the glass as it slowly sinks out of sight.

It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, some muddled tropical fruitiness, a damp minerality, and some tame earthy, musty, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy pale malt, subdued domestic citrus rind, some hard water flintiness, further indistinct exotic fruity notes, and more understated leafy, weedy, and musky floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite meek in its ennui-inducing frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and generally smooth, with nothing really getting in the way of waiting for the party to start time here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and mixed frooty essences presiding.

Overall - I have sensed for a while now that the tendency for pale ale/IPA brewers is to keep things hoppy, sure, but lose the overwrought (some would say desirable) bitterness. This offering displays that in spades, as there is a fair bit of hop flavour, but practically no bite to the whole affair. I've yet to form a solid opinion on the matter, but (near) old-school is looking very attractive right now.
