A: Pours an orange/reddish color. A one finger white head forms with retention and lace left behind.
S: Dark fruits of raisins and plums, with caramel malt. Alcohol becomes prominent and is more Ethanol, than I would like.
T: Like the nose, plenty of dark fruits. That range from raisins, plums and cherries. Caramel malt, and that all leads to tons of cloying sweetness. There is a bit of oxidation, and I actually like that in a barelywine. Though the Ethanol/alcohol becomes more than warming and just harsh. With nothing to balance.
M/O: A full body with moderate carbonation. This is syrupy and thick. Which is all appropriate for the style. Though the cloying sweetness and alcohol burn takes it toll. This becomes a chore to drink.
This is almost a good barleywine, but it is over the top in sweetness and alcohol presents. It just becomes too much, and there are other, better examples of the style. That have better balance and more nuanced malt character. Not outright bad, just average. I say that a lot with this brewery.
