Canned 10/19/18
Appearance - Pours black with cola brown edging around the edges. Tan, quarter-finger width head that fizzes way like cola, revealing a mostly barren surface. No lacing.
Smell - Some chocolatey notes, vanilla, lesser molasses. Aroma reveals a bit of smoke and dark fruit as it warms.
Taste - Follows the nose. Lots of vanilla and chocolate at first, but then a plethora of layers start to develop as it warms. Fair smokiness first, then a bit of dark fruit. Hints of roasted malt and oak. Faint molasses. Lingering black cherry fruitiness along with the mild smokiness. This is nice.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick, easy drinker with a thinning, dry finish. Maybe a tad thin, but forgivable considering it's a porter that's been barrel-aged.
Overall - I thought this might be good for a can, but it's really surprised me at the level of depth in flavor while also being stupid smooth. I'm shocked, frankly. I need to go back and grab a 4-pack, because this 16oz can is simply not enough to comprehend the beauty of this beer. This might be one of the few BA porters that I've truly appreciated.
