this is a proprietary label done for belhurst castle i believe, they dont actually brew out there, it must be done under contract here, didn't seem right to add mabel's as its own brewery here on BA, but i welcome any information that clears this up. cool project though, and huge thanks to my dad for sending this one and the new england ipa, i really liked them both. looks like maybe critz farm does some of their own grain growing too, maybe even malting, as the package lists their pale and chocolate malt as ingredients in this. this is a solid porter, in the robust category for me, really dark and roasty with some nice caramel malt richness in the middle, bitter and unapologetic, fuller bodied for its lower abv, i like this kind of porter even though it seems like we see less and less of it these days. light smoke and raisin and tobacco in the nose, a little brown sugar, molasses, and even rum in the flavor, although it doesnt have perceptible alcohol to me. also hints of wet dark soil from the garden, licorice, and bread yeast. some nice middle malt richness, toasted and caramelized both, not quite decadent because of the coffee notes and bitter roast late, but this comes in waves for sure. nice body to it, lovely long aftertaste, and overall a high quality product, impressively good even. never heard of this operation before my dad sent the cans, but i will be on the lookout for more when i am back east this summer, what a nice surprise. sturdy four season porter.
