Atco Brewing Company "Hop The Magic Dragon"

$4.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice label. The cartoon dragon caught my eye, and who can pass up a beer called "Hop The Magic Dragon"? I only hope the beer is just as good, but I've had other beers from ATCO and I'm guessing it will be. It's poured a hazy straw gold body beneath a massive head of densely foamy white. The aroma isn't too bright but it clearly expresses citrus, mainly grapefruit and lemon. I walked away and the head dropped a bit but left some very nice lacing. On to the flavor... no surprises here, it's got a lot of grapefruit and a squeeze of lemon over a basic, sweetish, and lightly grainy malt base. It's not too bitter but it's bitter enough, and it finishes crisp and dry with some bitterness lingering. As it warms it's becoming a little bit more resinous, and I'm finding some orange, mango, lime rather than lemon, and a hint of peach. Ahh, and there's some pine at the end as well. It's pretty impressive. I wish there was just a little bit more to the malt, but then again, that might throw off the balance so I'll say it's fine as it is. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled standard carbonation. Ahh, back to the head. It held pretty well, and left some great lacing while it was there. Eventually it dropped, as almost all heads do, and then the lacing became much more limited. Still, It's a very good appearance. In the end I'd say it's worth checking out.
