Notes via stream of consciousness: So what do we have here? An Imperial rauchbier at 11.7% abv! OK, let's go... it's an opaque brown-black beneath a tall head of dark tan foam. The head retention appear to be quite good and it's taking me a bit to get it topped off. I get sweetish and fruity (apples, red berries) chocolaty malt in the nose with just a bit of smoke. On to the flavor then... well, as a fan of rauchbier I'm a little disappointed that it follows the aroma pretty damned closely. I guess they didn't want to go too heavy on the smoke as that would probably turn a lot of people off. There's some caramel to it, and a light touch of nuttiness, and that works well with the milk chocolate note that's there. The yeasty fruitiness that I found in the nose is not as strong n the flavor but it still adds a notable additional component that lends to its complexity. I'm only finding smears of leafy hops in the finish, which is certainly OK, and really, to be expected. It's not that bitter but it's balanced and not "sweet". Some fruitiness, a touch of chocolate, a flicker of leafy hops, and some smokiness linger in the finish. The alcohol is surprisingly well cloaked for being 11.7%. In the mouth it's medium-full but leaning back toward medium, and the carbonation is soft and smooth. Looking back, the head held well and it's left some nice creamy lace about the glass. If it truly is 11.7% abv that's fairly impressive. So what's my final evaluation? I like the flavor overall with the milk chocolate, caramel, yeasty fruitiness, and soft smokiness all working together while still remaining clear on their own; there's nothing worse than a muddled up beer. Would I like more smoke? Yes, but that's a personal thing. The smoke is there and that's enough for me. This is a really strong beer but it's easy to drink. It's quite good, everything is in place and it works, but it's still missing that little something~something that makes a beer great. Regardless, I'm impressed and I'm hoping they'll repeat it and nudge it towards the incredible beer that it could become.
