Really, really poor. Harsh and fizzy, may even have been infected. I expect a lot more from Real Ale.

Update: four bottles out of the six pack were gushers, similarly harsh. Still consumable, but there's some kind of quality control issue here that is completely unacceptable from a brewery this size. I won't be trying this series in bottles again.

Per Real Ale's website (http://brewerscut.com/projects/ult), BC001 Signature Hop Pale Ale is a different beer than this one (BC015 Signature Hop Pale Ale). The former was brewed with HERKULES hops, whilst this one was brewed with Ultra hops. 45 IBU. 12.5 OG Plato. 5.90% ABV.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with generic label design and branded silver pry-off pressure cap purchased at Whole Foods HQ and served cold at altitude into a pilsner glass in Austin, TX. Reviewed live as a pale ale per the label and Real Ale's website.

Best consumed by 10.30.14. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Seven fingers wide. White colour. Nicely frothy and creamy. Good thickness. Great (~10+ minute) retention. Has a nice soft supple complexion.

BODY: Clear vibrant translucent transparent pale copper colour of great clarity. Appears clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible within. Appears aptly carbonated.

It's a good looking pale ale. I'm pleasantly surprised.

AROMA: Pale malts, some sweet caramalt, floral hop character, perfumey citrusy zest and crystal malt, sweetbread, and some grassy hop notes. A kiss of clove and vague spice.

A pleasant albeit light aroma which suggests an easy drinking but simple brew. I'm looking forward to trying this.

No yeast character, overt alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: There's subtle spiciness to these lightly herbal Ultra hops, and plenty of mellow floral hop character. It's not an oily, citrusy, nectary, juicy, or tropical hop profile, but there is a bit of grassiness and zest. Pale malts play well with the easygoing hops, and it's generally well balanced with no cloying sweetness or untamed rampant bitterness.

No alcohol, yeast character, or off-notes come through.

Very simple and mellow. Well built, though it does lack the intricacy and complexity of superior pale ales. It's very overt, lacking any subtlety, but it's very pleasant to drink and enjoyable.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, mellow, aptly carbonated, light to medium-bodied, refreshing, and thick enough to support the taste without being overbearing. This texture, while it doesn't accentuate the taste in interesting ways or elevate the beer as a whole, is a good companion to the taste. Nicely soft. Coats the mouth evenly. Has a really pleasant comforting overall presence on the palate.

Not stale, rough, scratchy, boozy, astringent, hot, gushed, or harsh.

OVERALL: Very easy to drink, and surprisingly pleasant. I could easily polish off a six pack of this in a night, but as much as I like it, it can't compete with truly great beers in the style - or even more widely available offerings like Deschutes'. The drinkability alone sets this one apart from the herd of mediocre offerings out there, though, and I'd absolutely bring a 6 pack of this to a party.

12oz Brown bottle with pry-off cap and best by date of 10/30/2014. Poured into a becker glass.

Appearance: Pours a faint amber with a little haze; quite a lot of head even without too rigorous of a pour, 2 fingers

Smell: Citrus hops with a fruity zest

Taste: A very interesting hop profile a pleasant mix of citrus with some spicy earthy tones and underlying malt with a crisp lemon grass finish

Mouthfeel: Might be a little too carbonated but not bad

Overall: This was a pleasant surprise. The hop aroma was splendid with the taste being a nice mix of flavors. I could be completely off, but this ultra hop reminds of mosaic but lighter and more floral after taste.
