This is really different. Its not failing in any particular area, and if you know you're getting into a wine-barrel aged beer, I guess the flavors shouldn't be surprising, but its not going to be for everyone.
There is a good malty backbone, to balance out the sweetness, but none of the wee heavy flavors come through for me. Overall, it was interesting to try, but not something I would come back to.

On tap at D&T in Houston.
A: Pours a murky, cloudy, nearly opaque with yeast brown color. A two finger beige head forms with some retention and lace.
S: Butterscotch up front. Reminds me of Werther's Original with some caramel and buttery sweetness. Some fairly big diacetyl going on in the nose. Vanilla sweetness, some wood, even a touch of tart fruits. Not sure what is going on here?
T: Like the nose, this is messy with no definition. Buttery, caramel malts. Certainly some diacetyl, as far as I am concerned. Vanilla, tart fruits, light wood. Not sure if there is suppose to be any tart/sourness, but that could certainly be oak tannins, as it is not overwhelming in the least. Though is present.
M/D: A full body, with moderate carbonation that is smooth. The alcohol is well masked, but this is all over the place. Hard to sip on with my perceived diacetyl and light sourness. Just messy.
Yep, not a fan of this. I really don't know if the sourness is from tannins, or what? This is not Scots Gone Wild, so not sure what to expect? Certainly some butterscotch. Along with some barrel character. One of my favorite styles, made by one of my favorite Texas breweries. Not to mention I love Real Heavy and Scots, but again this is messy and all over the place. If this was not Real Ale, I would probably rate this much lower, which is saying something.

Brown colored malt bomb with hints of raisin, vanilla, fig, scotch and a note of raspberry. Somewhat syrupy mouthfeel with a warming boozyness.
