big new england double ipa here, ive enjoyed quite a few from these guys, and it looks like there are several versions of this featuring different dry hops, but we left this in the beer fridge way too long by accident and definitely missed the window, both my wife and i really didnt care much for it, some oxidation and other unflattering hop fade, but its not hard to appreciate what it was when it was fresh, a bomb with a ton of strata in it, notes of coconut and cooked pineapple still holding on, especially in the aroma. its also really boozy, like perhaps fermentation continued a bit in the can, its alcoholic even when its cold, and as it warms it gets almost sloppy. there are some juicy orange and melon notes, a definite yeast aspect in play that might not have been there when it was newer, and some bitterness beyond what we usually see in the hazy ones, could be a product of its size but also of its age. it looks nice, like orange juice in the glass, bright still and dense without being chunky, and holding over an inch of creamy white head, perhaps its best remaining feature at this point. i think it smells quite a bit better than it tastes, sweet orange and cantaloupe, coconut, green grape, newspaper, and wet wood. the flavor is more decayed, and its full feeling, oily, sweet, and heavy, with definite cardboard character and this really is about gone, the back end worse than the front end, but still i cant be too harsh with the scores, this may have been awesome but it feels a little forced to me, the lack of freshness is on me not them, and i have to give them credit for what was assuredly a better beer than its showing right now. i hope to catch this fresh one day, and will commit to buying any variants i see for comparison. seems like a steady stream of their beers making their way out west, bummed this one got away, but still with some aspects to enjoy. strong as heck.
