We’re pleased to share a new fruit variant with Avalonia: Blueberry. A portion of the base component of barrel-aged (non-spontaneous) ales that found its way into Overture was transferred onto a blend of wild, cultivated and our own, hand-picked blueberries grown beside the brewery. In tasting the whole fruit, our hope was that depth and complexity of character, sometimes tough to achieve with a finnicky-fruit like blueberry, would carry through to the final beer in part due to such variety. We couldn’t be more pleased with the result and hope you enjoy!

Batch 1, bottled October, 2020. Coming out of the bottle this is a vibrant, reddish purple. Once in the glass it settles into a deeper eggplant color with a nice light purple head that recedes to a steady ring. Aroma leads with plenty of earth barnyard funk, complemented by faint blueberry notes.
The blueberry is a little more present on the tongue, with a nice amount of earthy funk emerging mid-palate to complement things. The blueberries create a red wine-ish impression on the lips post sip. Light bodied, very minimal tartness, and very easy going down. Overall, good beer.

This one pours a dark-ish purple color with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells strongly of blueberry, jammy, and slightly tart, with a hint of funk.
Blueberry can be tough to pull off, and they seemingly did it here. The blueberry is not too tart or acidic, and adds a pleasant wave of berry goodness. There's a hint of floral funk, and some lemon, and a bit of red wine.
This is light bodied, clean, slightly creamy, and very drinkable.
The Avalonia series is definitely some of the best fruited sours around.

Bottled: October 2020
Batch: 1
L: Pours a deep dark fully opaque burgundy. An aggressive pour results in a rough off white finger of head that immediately dissipates into nothingness. It looks like wine to me.
S: The nose is dominated by pungent blueberry. Supporting the blueberry I get a light funkiness, earth, and a barely perceptible dark fruit (other than blueberry....I want to say black grape).
T: On the front end of the palate I get waves of blueberries intermixed with notes of black grape and an earthy funk. The earth and funk follow through into the middle of the palate where they are suddenly assaulted by acetic, sour, and pungent blueberry that carry to the finish where they are complemented by notes of oak and barnyard funk.
F: The body is medium and the carbonation is higher than expected given the appearance....I would say a light to light-medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is a bit slippery on the front of the palate, but as it goes down it quickly turns sticky with a medium to medium-high acidity. The acidity is balanced by the drying finish.
O: This is an amazing wild ale! Kudos to FF, and I can only say that they have my attention. Keep up the good work. My only criticisms would be the look of the beer and that the mouthfeel is a bit too wine-like, but maybe that's what they were going for. Either way, highly recommended while it lasts.
