Collaboration with Westbound & Down
This is where we talk about this blend of Amalgam and Westbound Imperial Stouts aged in Heaven Hill barrels, finished on over a pound of toasted and raw coconut per gallon being a liquefied Mounds bar soaked in bourbon. Layers and layers of coconut from the nose to the finish supported by flavors of rich chocolate, vanilla and bourbon.

I haven’t had a bad stout from Westbound and Down yet, so I doubt a stout from their partner brewery, Amalgam, is going to fail me either.
This one pours a very dark and inky black, with a small mocha head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells like such high quality coconut - toasty, sweet, earthy, and never cloying. It melds really well with the barrel - some vanilla, oak, char. caramelized sweetness, and the intense fudge of the base beer. It shows that pastry stouts can be done well with just one high quality and carefully presented ingredient - you don’t need to shove the whole bakery in there.
This is thick, creamy, and velvety, with some warmth from the barrel but basically no boozy heat. It drinks so easily for the heft and weight it carries.
This is absolutely a special beer, and it outshone a lot of beers in a recent higher end share. These two breweries are making some of the best stouts and barleywines out there.
