I labeled this as an American Stout, but it is more like an Oyster Stout because it is made with briny sea kelp similar to the briny water used in an Oyster Stout, I would think. On the can it is listed as a Kelp Stout, so that's probably a first. I was able to pick this up at the Hog Island brewery in the merch store. Glad I tried this. A really good stout, very enjoyable even though it is a bit out of season and I had this with daytime temperatures in the 90s. Who cares. The beer is on the lighter side with a low ABV so you can have a few. The beer has maybe a touch of chocolate, a little coffee in the nose but not much to go on. The taste however is really outstanding. There are some bittering chocolates, some coffee grind, and that nice briny flavor from the kelp in this case. There is no oily mouthfeel just the nice bittering flavors that linger a bit. There isn't much head and minimal lacing. This is an enjoyable stout year round and I went back to the brewery to pick up another 4 pack. That says it all. Well worth seeking out if you can find it. When I bought this, the brewery's website didn't have it listed on tap. Maybe I got lucky.
