I found this beer to be little on the boozy sweet side for the style which is a problem with some Dopllebocks. It mellowed otu a bit as the beer warmed up but really this is not a top shelf example of the style. might be better cellared for a year or two.

I picked this up on my last full day in Augsburg, 02OCT09. This 0.5l bottle cost me 0.95EU (plus 0.08 dep) and has a best-by date of 15NOV10. Just got around to trying it on Saturday, 17OCT09...
Color is a deep, opaque chestnut, mostly seen at the edges of the glass. Quite a dense hue, otherwise. Head is thin even with a hard pour, and leaves a miniscule layer of light tan bubbles behind, mostly around the rim. A little lace is present here and there. Aroma is pleasing, with malty caramel and sweetness coming forth. Body is medium-plus, and 'Damus has a soft, smooth feel on the tongue.
Flavorwise, this one has a restrained sweetness combined with solid caramel hitting the palate. It hints at having brown sugar present, as well as some dark fruit. If you dig a little you'll find suggestions of floral hopping, though it's lurking in the background. Overall, this is a decent Doppelbock. Nothing to knock your socks off, but nothing to shy away from either. Prosit!!

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color bock with a medium bubbly head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of medium toffee malt with notes of caramel. Taste is also dominated by warm toffee notes with some caramel malt also discernible. Body is a bit thin for style with low carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Lacking complexity and ester and body is too thin for style.

Appearance: slightly cloudy with a light brown colour. The head is deep tan, frothy, and moderately large with impaired retention and no lacing.
Aroma: alcoholic vinous and sweet malts.
Taste: alcohol, sweet malts and port wine. Hints of hoppiness.
Mouthfeel: unctuous, medium to low carbonation, high alcoholic strength (9% ABV) and a full body.
Finish: long sweet vinous aftertaste.
Overall: elegant with a strong personality. Very interesting beer. Although the level of sweetness is quite high it is not cloying making this beer quite enjoyable.
