.5L Germany, best by 11/30/10.
Hazy burnt orange. Nice three-finger head atop my Weizen glass. Excellent retention, average lacing.
Very tangy, near sour, aroma for a Hefeweizen-- what a pleasant surprise. Light phenolic yeastiness, with notes of citrus rind.
Flavor is refreshing and tart. Good complexity for a light-bodied beer: fresh bread, acidic tartness, esters and fruit with only a touch of the customary banana. Finish is tangy, dry and herbal-bitter. Mouthfeel has a nice fluffy carbonation, but, overall, was a bit thin and watery. Highly drinkable and rewarding.
This is a unique Hefeweizen with a tart flavor, something which scores points with me. It came highly recommended from a German beer connoisseur and did not disappoint. Though, for the price (3+ euro) and name (the "Diamond") I was expecting something a bit more luscious and not simply refreshing.
