440 ml can, as Broughton Hopo 6.2 IPA, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. Clear deep golden colour, with a small, coarse and shortlived white head. Aroma of malts, toffee, caramel and over-ripe red berries. Malty flavour, slightly on the sweet side, some caramel, moderate earthy hops in the finish. Dull, won't buy again.

500ml bottle:
Clear, pale copper with a half cm, bubbly head that's creamy white |has a few bubbles rising through the body. The nose is strong & malty with biscuit, earthy hops & more alcohol than I'd have liked then some caramel to finish. The taste is very similar with strong caramel malts, biscuit & earthy hops, some grassy flavours & a strong alcohol finish that messes up the balance some. It's a clean taste with a strong hop bitterness throughout & plenty sweetness but there's just too much of the alcohol showing given it's only a 6.2% beer.

Got this one down the road at the wine guy in Maarssen here. One of two Broughton beers bought there for the first week in the new place.

From a 50cl bottle into a pint glass.
Malt: Pale ale & crystal
Hops: Pacific Jade, Chinook, Cascade and Columbus hops.
OG: 1.060
EBU: 71
EBC: 20

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, medium looking, fluffy, white head with excellent retention. Perfectly clear burnt orange with medium carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to half foamy cap and leaves some lacing down the glass. Half with remains and leaves some nice lacing down the glass as the glass empties.

SMELL: Caramel, toffee, some butterscotch, floral notes and some light melon melon notes. Bubble gum aromas a well. Bold enough and forthcoming, though the advertised citrus hop presence could be more in the forefront.

TASTE: Caramel and some grassy hop notes up front. Toffee sweetness and hop bitterness at the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of sweet toffee, melon, bubble gum, floral hops and a decent level of bitterness that balances the sweet malt very nicely.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with slightly lower levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: This is billed as an American IPA but there's not much American about it. According to the label it uses US hops in quadruple the amount of a standard IPA, but the and profile of this beer is all English. Lots of toffee and sweet bubble gum character with a good dose of bitterness to balance it all, and to be totally honest, it's wonderful as it is. This is a fantastic English IPA and is more than worth checking out. If you get the chance, don't hesitate. Great stuff.

On cask at 'spoons in Helensburgh. Amber colour with lots of miniscule bublles in suspension. A lemon nose and on the grassy side. It has a somewhat syrupy feel and a tangy citric start rather like an amber before becoming rather more minty and then slightly leafy, culminating in a bitter finish with a touch of brown sugar in the aftertaste. Good stuff.
