Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass with a thin, light brown head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of toasted malt, molasses and light coffee. Flavor is toasted malt, lightly nutty, hints of chocolate and malt, a bit thin. Light bodied with good carbonation. A pleasant, light stout. Body seems thin for an oatmeal stout and flavors are somewhat attenuated, but what is present is quite good. I'd like to try a more intense version of this. Nicely done for a mild stout.

NB: Best By date is 11/12, which means it was probably about a year old when opened. Might have affected the review.

Poured from the 16.9 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip glass.

a: Black with a hint of ruby at the bottom. Tall tan head dissipated fairly quickly to a thick tan surface foam and lacing.

s: Barest hint of dark malt.

t: A rather bitter stout blast which smooths out as it is consumed until it feels weakish.

m: Rather light for a stout. OTOH easy drinking for a stout.

o: A decent but not outstanding stout, a bit disappointingly watery. Would be relatively refreshing for summer drinking compared to some other stouts. If my summer choice was limited to stouts, this might be a top pick, especially to session, since the ABV is probably about as low as a stout - or most other non-light beers for that matter - ever gets.

From the 500 ml. bottle with a Best By date of Nov 12. Sampled on March 27, 2012. It pours very dark brown to nearly black with a huge, foamy tan head that settles down after a short moment. The aroma is not in your face. It is mellow and subtle with dark malts and oats. The body is around medium and maybe a bit better. The taste tends to focus more on bitterness. It begins with a likeable dose of dark barley malts and then zings me a little at the end with a clean bitterness.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: deep brown hue, very near black, admitting a little ruby tint when held up to the light. Head poured one finger of creamy tan foam, which dissipated quickly.

Smell: fruity malt aroma with just a touch of roastiness. Fruit character reminds me a bit of mix berries. I like it.

Taste: light malty flavor with some roast, as in the aroma. More of that fruitiness is present, and bitterness is nice and balanced.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a nicely silky, creamy texture. Good stuff!

Overall: this is a nicely quaffable stout. I love a sessionable dark beer like this.

My girlfriend bought this for me in Charleston, SC. I poured it into a flared pint glass.
Appearance: The body is a deep opaque black. The head is one finger tall, tan, small bubbles, poor lacing but great retention.
Smell: The aromas are toffee, coffee and roasted grain.
Taste: The flavors are a bit sour, toffee notes and some dates.
Mouthfeel: This beer is moderately smooth.
Drinkability: I put this beer right at average.
Don't drink and review.

A light black with a thin soapy white head, that fades quickly and leaves little lacing. A sweet lactos, coffee aroma, with a hint of chocolate. Flavor is rather plain, roasty, sweet,a bit of coffee and coco, the hops seem to be hiding somewhere, I detect little to none, little carbonation, short finish, with a bit of dark bread, and rasins, very thin body.Drinkable but not very memoriable.

A: Poured a dark red color with a light tan pillowy head.

S: a big dried fruit aroma, rich chocolate, and some malty sweetness.

T: For flavor there was a big coffee flavor with a smooth texture that is very rich and dark. Some cocoa beans and dark chocolate close things out with a dark malty lacing. Only 4.2abv but drinksmuch bigger with a big roasted character. Leaves a nice bitter coffee lacing on the fade.

M: creamy from the malting and slick on the swallow, but a little thin per style.

D: creamy with a rich flavor and low abv makes this an easy one to put down with causal conversation.

Poured a very dark brown color that was nearly black with a nice tan head that dissipated fairly quickly. Aroma was of roasted malt and hints of peat. Flavor was like aroma with the roasted malts flavor and hints of peat, chocolate and the malt sweetness coming through. Mouthfeel was good, though not as silky as some stouts. Drinkability was good.

L: Pours a deep brown color with hints of red at the bottom of the beer. Very small and kind of thin tan colored head that has some lacing down the glass.
S: Smells of very sweet roasted malts and then some chocolate, some scotch, and some pete.
T: Tastes of sweet roasted malts, chocolate, and then the scotch flavors of pete and wood come through at the end.
M: Very smooth and velvety feeling but perhaps a bit too sweet.
D: Pretty drinkable as the beer was downed no problem, but perhaps a bit too sweet.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appears very dark brown near black with some red highlights on the bottom of the glass. Initial one and a half inch tan head quickly sinks down to a skim. Leaves a trace amount of lace.

Aromas of sweet chocolate, with a bit of milkiness to it kind of like a shake. Not the best ever but very pleasing.

Taste is initially chocolatey with a bit of coffee bitterness and wet wood in the back. A bit of that milky creaminess comes through, but it mostly just ends up tasting kind of bland compared to a full flavored stout. Not bad, just not that good.

Mouthfeel could be better for an Oatmeal Stout. Body is medium, pretty smooth, but not really silky like some of the better Oatmeal Stouts.

This stuff was pretty decent, it's quite drinkable, but there are definitely better oatmeal stouts out there. When it's less than a dollar more for a Samuel Smith, I'm going with that.

1 Pint 9 oz. bottle in a pint glass.

A - Nice dark brown with a thin tan head.

S - Chocolate and malt smells are the most present. It is also a little sweet.

T - Really thin and bitter. Slight chocolate flavor but I can't get past the bitterness and how thin this is.

M - Light to medium bodied with slightly high carbonation.

D - Not impressed. I really didn't like this at all.

Pours a very nice dark color, nearly black, although with very little head and lacing for a stout. Nice scent, it's very sweet from the oatmeal with nice burnt grain undertones. Nice taste, it has good attributes of a stout (burnt grain and slight coffee flavors) and oatmeal (you can actually taste the oatmeal here and it adds a nice sweetness), but all of the flavors nearly cancel each other out, and the flavor, while well blended, tends to be a little weak. it does go down very easily, though. Probably my least favorite of the Broughton Ales group that I've tried, but still worth a shot or two.

Poured from a large Euro bottle to a pint glass the dark liquid has ok carbonation. The head is close to 2 fingers, off white and leaves little lace.

The smell is smoky roasty malt. Smells a bit like a Scotch Ale.

The taste follows, it seems to be a bix between a Scotch Ale and a Irish Stout. Nice roasty taste, molasses and dark caramel.

zThe mouthfeel is good, not reall thick and the carbonation seems a bit flat.

The drinkability is ok, nothing to rave about, it is an interesting brew, I would try it again now that I know what to expect.

A: Dark brown color. When held up to the light, some ruby red is seen. Beige head and light lace.
S: Roasted malt and a woody/peaty aroma. Not what I think of when drinking an oatmeal stout.
T: A bit of oats. Lots of peaty and woody malt again. Not much depth.
M/D: Thin and watery. Inoffensive and easy to drink.

Nothing special, but this won't offend anybody that likes stouts.

Dark - yes
Head - no
Taste - at first not much, then a sour milk aftertaste
The smell was ok, not bad but did not even hint to the bland then after swallow assault ahead.
I love a good stout and like a good oatmeal stout, and this is easily the worst I have ever tried.

Put a MR YUK label on the bottle!

this beer poured a thin opaque black with zero head. the smell is a bit malty, but not much else going on. the taste is thin in both mouthfeel and character. this isn't a bad beer, but is not one that i would seek out. it's very much on the light side and as the previous reviewer said, probably a good example of an introductory stout for someone not familiar with or new to craft beers.

Really nothing special about this stout. Very easy to drink seeing as how the ABV is 4.2% It pours an opaque black but kinda stops there. Not much head that lingers nor is it very aromatic. Taste was OK but nothing to brag about. Would be a good stout to use while introducing a newcomer to the style. Overall, as a stout fan, this was a very Ho-Hum beer.
