Tasted by a half-pint at the Market Porter, next to the Borough Market in London, on 19 Feb. 2007; hand-pulled w/o the aid of a sparkler.
A: clear dark russet in colour, coming with a fluffy light-khaki head, on top of low fizziness.
S: winey dark fruitiness and sour-sweet crystal malts come on top of very limited hoppiness, showing a messed-up structure overall.
T: licorice abounds in addition to a rather Dark Mild-like bitter-sweet flavour the maltiness is accompanied by sparse tart hints and herbal tea, with a very moderate bitterness in the end.
M&D: the texture is flat and the body is very thin, while the flavour shows disintegration in each single sip without any clear theme or direction. This is not off-ish at all, but I would like to believe that the cellarmanship did somehow affect the quality and condition of this ale, otherwise Broughton Brewery really should be spanked for producing such a lacklustre ale that does not stand up to its name at all
