A wonderful Light Ale that is golden in color with a mild hop flavor and subdued bitterness. Marathon won a Bronze Certificate in the 1998 & 2001 California State Fair!

Trying the Marathon at the brewery in Long Beach. It poured a clear yellow with white head that is not leaving much of a lace. The scent has bread tones. The taste is nicely balanced and easy to drink with biscuit prominence. The Mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok.

On tap at Belmont Brewing Company in Long Beach, CA.
Pours a clear gold with a beige head that fades to nothing. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of grain and some slight grassy aromas. Taste is grain and grass/hay notes. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it tastes better than it smells.

Consumed at brewery, 11/12/07.
Medium golden hue, nice carbonation. Bubbles continued to rise throughout tasting.
No aroma to note.
Light-bodied in both flavor and mouthfeel.
Subtle hops on finish take over from bashful malt flavor.
Umm.. boring.

A: A really light, drab golden color
very clean with nice bubble movement. Head is a solid inch of soapy snow white bubbles.
S: Green apple, black pepper, cantelope, honey and dandelions.
T: Starts very doughy with caramel and cinnamon aspects to it. Green fruits come next leaning towards the pear side. Mineral tastes add some limestone appeal. Finishes grainy which ultimately chills out after a while. Aftertaste is long lingering caramel malts and cookie dough.
M: Thin body with full but slightly fuzzy mouthfeel.
D: That initial first step threw me off with the grainy finish. Once my palate acclimated though I really started to enjoy this beer. Good balance, solid flavors. Malty enough to not be boring but clean enough to be refreshing.

Presentation: Sampled at Belmont Brewing Company, Long Beach during a lazy Sunday afternoon. I decided to head down and sample the Marathon, Top Sail and Long Beach Crude to while away a few hours. Arrived in a Pint glass with a dime short pour once the head settled, but it was Happy Hour so what the heck!
Appearance: Soft pale golden, clear yet faded looks, hints of amber in the appearance at times. Slacking white head stays ½ thick after the pour but soon fizzles a little and then quickly drops down to a thin covering, yet it remains, but only just. Good conditioning and a little lacing.
Nose: Gentle nose, light hop twang with a soft delicately toasted malt background. Gentle and laid back but nice enough.
Taste: Judicious hop level mingle with the lightly toasted malts to produce a moderated bitterness. Dry and clean with a soft hop bitterness. Rather easy to break down but well put together nonetheless.
Mouthfeel: Light body with an easy going feel to it. Carbonation has a creamy feel to it which takes the edge off of the low key but clean hop bitterness.
Drinkability: A smooth drink that starts with a sessionable quality to it, but the low key flavors soon make it hard work and a bit of a drag. OK, for a few Pints at least but it soon fades.
Overall: Lacks any bold character but it does what it does, that is to say that this is the entrance brew for many that visit the BBC for the first time punter and so it is often the first brew that they start with. As a reasonably frequent visitor to BBC Ill pop for one now and then but its not a favorite. Sold in bottles as well now.

Presentation: 22 oz bomber.
Appearance: Poured a cloudy yellow with just a hint of orange to it, and a niec frothy head. Very good head retention.
Smell: Sweet malt with a very subdued hop presence.
Taste: Nice clean light malt flavors, with just a bit of floral hops in there. Not very bitter at all.
Overall impression: This is a well made light beer. It certainly wouldn't be my first choice here, but for the style it is well done, and will please the BMC crowd.
