A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a burnt orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of melons, earthy. Taste is resin, melons, alcohol, considerable bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall it ain't bad, but it's a bit unbalanced and the falvors are not exactly playing well together.

Welcome (back, sort of) to the CANtinuation of New Oliver Beer Sunday (Week 772), which I beCAN last Sunday & did not have a ChANce to finish. Not only does this further The CANQuest (tm), but it also helps to clear a logjam from my reefer. There really is a modicum of reasoning to this ongoing madness. At long last, we are CANming into the meat & potatoes of this brewery horizontal!

From the CAN: "The Double India Pale Ale Series"; "Long live rock and roll"; "Crown Of Lies is a double IPA, bittered and dry hopped with Centennial. Inspired by Mothership's new album, it's a tribute to the undeniable bond between great beer and loud rock and roll."; "Oliver Brewing Co. has been proudly brewing craft beer in Baltimore, MD since 1993."; "Drink Fresh. Please Refrigerate."

This is going to be it for me. I have to be upright & breathing in front of youngsters tomorrow, so discretion in the better part of valor. It's been CANother great NBS, but it is catching up to me.

The Crack! was brilliant. I followed that up with yet CANother slow, steady, C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. The immediate & intense foaming action eventually led to the settling formation of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with great retention. Color was CANother gorgeous Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was green & dank! ImagCAN going into your garden in the middle of summer. You are growing peppers, grass, hay & tomatoes. You have just tilled the unused soil in preparation for a new planting of seeds & you take a deep breath. That is what this smelled like! Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium, a tad thin for the style. The taste had an unabating earthiness & now, I want to add onions to our jardin. I'm guessing Summit & Simcoe in some amount in this one. Tasty. I was put in mind of a Zangari's onion pizza with this one. Onion, tomato, green pepper, dough, light oregano, grass, hay. Very earthy, very mild in terms of its bitterness, but big on dank. Man, this is what the farmers have on Saturday night in our county! Phew. This is nicely mellow until it creeps up. Think iron fist in velvet glove! Finish was semi-dry, very mellow, lightly hoppy & WAY too drinkable to be safe. 8=O YMMV.

Light copper with some chill haze. Not much head, negligible retention and lace
Aromas of mango, pine, dank, grapefruit
Pine/resin and orange flavor
Perfect for a DIPA
Pretty good!

A: Golden nice head with lots of carbonation. Mostly clear. Head falls quickly and has a some lacing left in the glass.

A: Mounds of citrus with pinnacle grapefruit and orange. Some mango, straw and bready malts round out the aroma. Very nice.

F: Follows through with the big citrus up front with more pineapple, grapefruit, and orange. A bit more of the herbal grasses and straw comes through in the flavor. Some for the bread malts finish up.

M: Medium body with good carbonation. Flavors continues through but clear has lots of buttering hops. Finishes bitter bit appropriate for the style. A little of the alcohol heat is noticeable as well.

O: very good example of the style and a well done DIPA.

Extremely cool label, but, for me it sort of ended there. The profile on this is all over to the point where I'm not really sure what the brewery is attempting to create here. The malting is overly sweet, and the finish is overly bitter. Looking at earlier reviews, I have to wonder if they're having consistency issues.

Look is hazy orange-gold. Very fruit forward aroma. Taste is fruity, somewhat dry and bitter on the back. Finish is slightly bitter. Good job Oliver, keep it up.

As a new England IPA snob, this can have a seat at the table with vermont. First in Maryland I can say that about.
