diving into the cellar yet again (hey, I'm bored and indoors, you do the math)
picked this one up in Prince Frederick MD on one of my yearly retreats to the area...
eyes...
fizzy white head that calms down quickly but remains in place just enough, really nice lacing graces the glass on a casual swirl, caramel golden hue, plenty of carbonation in the glass but spaced out quite nicely, not bad
nose...
musty honey, grains, hints of white wine, whiffs of whiskey, slight barrel (wood) notes, it is actually quite nice despite my not so great description
taste...
medium to light body (like me in high school), definite subtle burn in the gullet from the kicked up ABV (the bottle says 12% and I believe it, not that I am in the habit of listening to bottles but this one seems like a trustworthy folk, and I am a good judge of character), the carbonation is pretty silky, the flavor is kind of slightly white wine/dry-ish with some grain notes, old honey (like not as sweet as it should be), I do get whiskey notes in the after taste of this, slight, but there, as this drinks on (or I do) this really takes on more of the whiskey notes, it winds up being sort of mild whiskey, it has the kick in the back as well to be whiskey (well, ok, not the real throat burn type of stuff but a reminder, for sure)
verdict?
interesting, I know, that sounds like the kiss of death, but this is not bad, just not great/bowl me over, not for me at least, it has really unique flavors happening but they are not thrilling me personally, nothing is off putting but I think this style escapes my zone, the ABV is well hidden considering so this is well made in that sense, I enjoyed it but would not kill to re-visit it, by the end it was more like whiskey-ish and by then I would just like a nice glass of bourbon (basil's rye for example), if you like rye whiskey though, give this a try, pretty damn drinkable.

Amber color. Malty, sugary nose. Flavor is strongly malty but still mellow, balanced by a bit of hop bitterness. Some notes of caramel, nuts, and very mild citrus pith. Medium body, not too much carbonation. A very nice, warm autumn brew. —Reviewed 2017/10/25
