16oz can from Brewers Haven. Clear amber pour, fizzy beige head. Woody, nutty aroma. Taste brings in elements of tobacco, nutty, sweet. Light hoppy back end. Looks like can is from Oct 2019, but is still really good.

A: The beer is very hazy light brown in color. It poured with a finger high light beige head that has excellent retention properties and only died down a bit.
S: Moderate aromas of golden raisins are present in the nose along with notes of brown bread.
T: The taste has flavors of raisins along with notes of dark fruits and brown bread along with a touch of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer didn't have the silky smooth mouthfeel that you get from a nitro stout, but the nitrogen actually helped to make this beer feel a bit lighter in body compared to other doppelbocks, making it easier to drink.

another stillwater collaboration for these guys, and another nitro can, which i actually remembered to shake up this time, but still with less than spectacular results, foamy and soft and it holds its head, but there is almost no cascade, and the beer itself seems a little flat, i think the widget is the way to go with these. a pretty deem amber color to this under the more than full inch of off white cream on top. it smells a little umami, soy sauce, long boiled grain sugar, brown sugar, and toffee, not as german as the best of them, and seemingly a little muted, i get the alcohol but almost nothing from the lager yeast. the flavor is lightly salty to me, kind of earthy and weird, minerals and dark sweet malt, not as much character overall to this as i was hoping for out of it, and im not sure the nitro flatters it at all. its smooth to drink, but it also seems to be missing something. its still identifiable as the stated style, its bock through and through, but its otherwise quite unremarkable. slightly tangy, a bit still, alcoholic. affordable and more traditional than i am used to from these two, but it didnt live up to expectations for me.

473mL can stamped 10/24/18 WEICH UND BEIDIG poured into a mug at fridge temp 8% ABV with nitrogen. The beer pours mostly bright rusty copper in color with typical nitro cascading beige head. The head settles to a half inch cap. The aroma is somewhat muted with some sweet bread and earthy hops. The taste is semisweet toasty bread with some earthy hops flavor and little bitterness. The mouthfeel is creamy, medium to full bodied with typical nitro feel and a mostly dry finish. Overall, ok to good. I'm not a big nitro fan, but this was interesting if nothing else.

Tea colored, beautiful head, mild aroma, sweet but not too sweet flavor, nice feel. Combine above with 8% alc content makes this perfect for a one-off after (or before) work. I hope they make a version without the nitro boost.

 

A - Slightly hazy ruby color with very thick creamy white head on top.

S - Earthy and malty on the nose with some dryness.

T - Toasted caramel, hoppy earthiness, light citrus, and balanced finish.

M - Silky smooth and big medium body.

O - Very good. Worth a try.

 

Welcome to my New Nitro (N2) CAN Mother's Day Beer Sunday (Week 742)! I have been meaning to make these a part of The CANQuest (tm) for some time & today seemed apropos.

From the N2 CAN: "Must be refrigerated"; "1- Gently Shake Can to Activate Nitrogen 2 - Open, Turn Over and Pour Hard".

I did some gentle shaking, per their directions, before Crack!ing open the vent. I usually just invert the CAN a few times, but they called for shaking. The Crack! led to an intense hissing & I wondered if I had overdone things. I only did this action until the CAN became very solid to the touch. I would NOT recommend excessive shaking. The cascade worked very quickly in this one, quickly forming two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, light-tan head with great retention. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was quite sweet & nutty with notes of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, dark bread and walnuts. Mmm. Mouthfeel was full and creamy, thanks to the N2 charge. The taste was a malt bomb, for sure! It was quite sweet, but the flavors were not diminished by the N2, which often (usually) happens. Instead, here it was quite sweet, very bready with a caramel/toffee sweetness accompanied by a nuttiness that was quite welcome. Previous reviewers mentioned that this was quite well-made & I would have to agree. This was a really nice Doppelbock & the inclusion of N2 was a stroke of genius! Finish was semi-sweet, lingering with a breadiness that made me think of the monks & their "liquefied bread". I drank mine towards the end of the day, but this could be quite sustaining if CANsumed first thing in the morning.

 

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 10/24/018. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber/light copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and creamy light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick creamy soapy lacing clings on the glass, with light streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, and roasted nuts; with light notes of chocolate, raisin, plum, fig, date, pear, red apple, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, and roasted nuts; with light notes of chocolate, raisin, plum, fig, date, pear, red apple, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, roasted nuts, light chocolate/dark fruit, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeasty notes present. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Light carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an outstanding doppelbock. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Fantastically soft nitro finish. Extremely clean and rich dark/Munich malt complexity; with balancing earthy hops. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and very impressive spot on style example. They definitely nailed it.

Moderate to vigorous (nitro) pour yields a one inch egg shell head over a translucent reddish-brown body with some lacing, at first. Head refuses to disappear as it hangs on for the duration. Sort of lackluster nose of slight dark malt, slight chocolate, and cracker. Taste is where this shines as the dark malt and chocolate come through very nicely with a malted milk and nutty finish. Delicious! Great feel and overall, this tastes kind of like a milk stoutish dark lager hybrid!?! Cheers!

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this should be interesting, a nitro doppelbock. There's no widget in the can but it's poured with a creamy off-white head atop a mostly clear reddish body. The aroma is limited to some bready and caramelish maltiness, but it should be that way. The flavor delivers rich malt with a caramel component and some leafy, herbal, and softly citrusy hops threaded through. A firm bitterness balances it and helps it to finish dry along with a light touch of spiciness that might be coming from alcohol and might be coming from hops. It has an interesting dryness and I wonder if perhaps there were some oak staves involved in its production. There's a note of orange that lingers which is nice. In the mouth it's medium full, and certainly creamy and smooth due to the carbonation with Nitrogen added. Interestingly enough, I don't feel that the nitro treatment really helps this beer. I think with a standard carbonation it might have a little more sparkle - but then again I've never tasted it that way so who knows? Looking back, the head retention is great but it hasn't left a lot of lacing behind. I'll certainly buy this again if I come across it, especially on tap, as it's got a nice, interesting twist to it while not straying too far from the original style.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium to dark reddish orange with a thin off-white head that dissipates to patches with slight lacing. Aroma of biscuit malt, brown bread, dates and nuts. Flavor biscuit malt with a hint of dry caramel, figs, dates, brown bread, hazelnuts. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. A well made, rich doppelbock with a pleasant malt base and classic dark bready characteristics. Decent complexity and great nutty and malty aftertaste. I'm not sure I poured this quickly enough, it is supposed to be nitro, but although it has a nice creamy body, it is not quite draft nitro quality. Nevertheless, an excellent domestic take on the doppelbock style.
