This beer is almost a year old. It has been stashed in my refrigerator all this time. The last red wine barrel aged beer I tried was from the Brurey. That beer was amazing, it had vibrant wine and barrel notes. The beer is 52 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The pour of the beer produced a one finger creamy tan head with good retention. The head dissipate slowly leaving some lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is dark brown nearly black in color. The beer is less than 10 percent in alcohol. I thought this beer would have a longer lasting head.
The aromas in the beer are vinous, earthy, a subtle sour note, dark roasted malts, wood, molasses, chocolate, coffee, raisins, and toffee.
The flavors in the beer are cherry, earthy, tannic, red wine, sour wine note, chocolate, coffee, wood, molasses, fig, dark roasted malts, biscuits, and herbal.
The mouthfeel of the beer is tannic and dry.
The body of the beer is full minus, low carbonation, and medium-plus finish.
I am on the fence about this beer. The body of the beer is not as robust as I would want to feel in mouth. For me it has the consistency of a porter but more and not quite a stout consistency. The red wine barrel aging come through beautifully but the beer made me yearn. Getting to the point of almost 1400 beer and several of those being stouts. I have tasted a wide range of super thick chocolate shake beer to, really this is a stout. Good beer, but for me, it need more body. I am not asking for a super thick beer but something with heft.
