I know that I have not reviewed for a while & while I will CANtinue to simply do check-ins on sister site, Untappd, this is too rare a CANportunity to pass up ISO The CANQuest (tm). This will be that rarest of birds - a side-by-side/back-to-back CANparison of the base CO2-driven beer vs its nitrogenated N2 CANterpart! Those in the know know what the outCAN will be: N2 gives the beer a creamy mouthfeel, but it kills the subtle nuances of the taste. Or so I believe, which is precisely why I like to CANduct CO2 vs N2 side-by-sides. You CAN disagree with my methodology or simply with me in general, but this is how I roll on #NitroTuesday !
From the CAN: "Oatmeal Stout"; A rich Chocolate Oatmeal Stout with light undertones of Coffee."; "Oliver Brewing Co. has been proudly brewing craft beer in Baltimore, MD since 1993."
Next, a Crack! of the vent on the less traditional 16-fl oz CAN. This one requires a bit of preparation, involving some inversion before the Crack! I went with an aggro, but not inverted, Glug. I watched in rapt fascination as the cascade slid up the side of the awaiting glass to create two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with stunnning retention, forming an impenetrable barrier between me & the beer. Color was inky Black (SRM = 44) allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose was roasty with a CANbined chocolate & coffee scent. Mmm. Mouthfeel had the dense creaminess that one should expect from/with an N2 pour. Here, the "killing" of the taste was actually a good thing as it removed the sharpness of the CO2 pour & allowed for a more chocolatey & coffee-like flavor to emerge. Finish was dry, perhaps on the leading edge of the style, but still a welcomed addition to this CANparison.
N2 = winner!
