Served in a pint tumbler at Loyal Legion Beaverton.
Look:
Nearly opaque brown-black with cola brown highlights. Half a finger of tan head fades quickly to a thin, stubborn ring.
Smell:
Buttered sweet coffee. Cream and sugar, but mostly butter and burnt grains. I should have heeded this as the clear warning it was meant to be.
Taste:
Ooooff. Brown sugar, cold coffee with vanilla-flavored non-dairy creamer, cola, and buttered popcorn Jelly Belly. Notes of red wine, orange peel, and artificial maple syrup. No oak or rye character, and not much nutmeg or cinnamon makes it past the pepper burn. Or the butter, which is unavoidable from start to finish.
Feel:
Slick mouthfeel with too much spicy burn from the chili peppers. A touch of fusel alcohol and prickly carbonation don't help.
Overall:
This beer looks good on paper, but doesn't smell or taste good in the glass. The only element which gives the buttery diacetyl flavor any real competition is the obtrusive chili heat. Some vanilla comes through, but it can't do much. This is not a good example of a porter, or a rye porter, or even a Mexican hot chocolate-inspired beer. Sorry, Abuela.
