this is pretty righteous beer, especially for an upstart brewery like this, and i was stoked to see something so ambitious on tap at steel barrel, which i guess serves as a taproom for a couple of new breweries without physical spaces yet. this is a sour brown base, but its done with sage and aged in red wine barrels, cabernet if i remember correctly, and its really well done! the red wine on it is strong in nose and taste, and brings a ton of fruit, from fig and raisin to black cherry and raspberry, and there is a nice oak tannin layer in here as well, seemingly pushing all the fruit right up against the vinegar acidity, which is bright but not too much, and the alcohol, which is warming but not hot. the sage is a neat addition, not sure i have seen that in one of these before, but it somehow works super well with the dry cocoa notes in the base brown ale, can handle the acidity, and its really neat with the wood here too. i love the funkiness this has in it with the wine fruitiness, and the way it seems so mature, like its years old, which i dont think can possibly be the case, these guys havent been around that long have they? cherry and brandy notes in the finish, balsamic and dried herbs, very much a fall or even thanksgiving specific palate, port wine, some brown sugar, and cooked raspberry too, really complex and delicious, the wine and the sage make this a really distinctive oud bruin, an impressive offering from anyone, but especially from an upstart like this. ill be back for more of their beers when i return to spokane next month, this was a really awesome surprise!
