on the maltier side, but not exactly old school either, i thought this was quite good, very fresh, kind of a style bender, almost like a pale ale, but also on the bitter side, a well made beer and quite familiar, but an enjoyable drink to be sure. its copper colored, pretty clear, and holds over an inch of just off white head, thick as shaving cream, nice in the glass. aroma of northwestern hops well dosed throughout the process, pine and spruce and juniper and woodsy notes, some oils evident, and then a lot of toasted and biscuity malts, plenty of medium crystal barley in this, also very fresh tasting, and a clean ferment from what i can tell. the flavor starts with a nutty, baked malt, a little richer here than is common, even in beers of the same color, and i like the depth, almost more of a red base than a pale one, some light caramel to it, but not real sweet, especially with all the hops that rise up in here. quite a bit of pine and resinous hop character, some woody, centennial type hops as well, bitter citrus zest for a second, wet leaves and branches, autumnal in that way, oddly fast finishing and clean for being so malty, just the hop bitterness lingering on the swallow. the proportions of this beer are awesome, as is the freshness and bold balance. i have liked the beers ive had from these guys so far, id be happy to have a pint of this one any time!
