Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Bottled for the 2001 GNIBF.
Appearance: Pours a luscious opaque black beer with a light coffee coloured creamy foam head -- sticky with good retention.
Smell: Aromas of light paper and light roasted malts. There's a background molasses aroma and a touch of caramel too.
Taste: A bit sharp and acrid up-front, with a mouthful of roasted malt astringency and smokey characters. An hop bitterness is trapped under this flavour strangle-hold, perhaps squirming out here and there with a leafy feel. Some oxidation is perceived in the form of wet paper. There's very little malt character and/or sweetness, making for a thin beer. Finish is a touch dry with acrid leftovers.
Notes: Didn't like this offering at all. A very weak, unbalanced and unimpressive stout.
