On tap at the brewery, served in a goblet.
Look: Black, with a one-finger light tan head with pretty good retention, and nice lacing.
Nose: Dark roast, a little coffee, a little dried dark fruit.
Attack: Follows the nose gently, not terribly deep in flavor, but enjoyable. Bitterness is higher than in many American stouts, but consistent with its listed 49 IBU.
Finish: Bitterness from the dark roast — perfect, in fact — but then unfortunately an astringent aftertaste, as in the other beer I reviewed here today. What’s going on in the water here, or is it an eccentricity in both my and my wife’s taste buds?
Mouthfeel: A bit thin for a stout, but adequate carbonation, then there’s the astringent aftertaste.
Overall: I’d like this stout were it not for the astringent aftertaste.
