.5L on-draught @ the brewpub for 48,000 dong plus a sneaky 10% VAT. Tmavy.
A: Pours a thick coating head with incredible froth and creaminess; I'd almost think this was nitro-dispense to look at it. Lasts a long while (10ish minutes), coating the sides of the glass as it recedes.
Body is a dark brown-black; opaque. No yeast is visible within.
Looks apt for a Tmavy without impressing.
Sm: Easily the most muted reticent aroma in any beer I've tried in the last year. I get the briefest wisp of Amber malt, and that's it. Couldn't be weaker.
T&Mf: Captures that dark bread dominant aspect of a good Tmavy, with moderate malty sweetness from dark and amber (Vienna? CaraMunich?) malts. Cream. Cola. Vague nuttiness.
Shallow and simple, but not imbalanced though some will find it too sweet.
Smooth, wet, creamy, medium-bodied, well-carbonated, bready/filling, and of moderate thickness & heft on the palate.
Not a gestalt Tmavy build. Lacks an ideal harmony of texture and taste.
O: Better than this brewpub's svetly lager, but not a serious contender in terms of true Czech Tmavy. Still, it's a better expression of the style than one might expect of a Vietnamese brewpub brewing in consistently potent Southeast Asian heat. I have no desire for another, but you can do far worse in the region.
