Review number 600!

This was a birthday present in August 2024, drunk the next month.

L: A thick, hazy, golden orange-hued beer sits in the glass. There's not much head, but what does exist leaves rings of lacing on the way down. If I look hard at the edge of the glass, I can see quite a bit of carbonation hastening up the glass.

S: A big tropical fruit bowl highlighted by mandarin, pineapple, guava and mango. Very expressive for a lowish-alcohol beer!

T: As expected, the taste mirrors the nose, with the addition of a harsh, grapefruit- and lemon-like bitterness that wasn't softened by the body of the beer but which I quickly got used to and subsequently enjoyed. The finish is sweet and bitter and rounds everything off perfectly.

M: Carbonation is medium to high and kicks on the swallow. My one knock on the beer is the slightly thin body that exacerbates the initially harsh bitterness, and the beer loses points for that.

O: This is an excellent "session IPA", but at 4.6%, isn't it just a pale ale? Regardless, it was very much enjoyed.

Cheers!

$15 AUD per pint at Cookie, Melbourne, Australia.

Not as muted as many of these Australian pale ales dressed up as IPAs or XPAs for marketing purposes, but the hop profile leaves much to be desired. Vague citrus, reticent stonefruit, generic floral hop flavour.

2-row pale malt lends it a clean unobtrusive malt backbone.

Drinkable and balanced for a pale ale (which is what it is; let's dispense with the "session IPA" shenaniganery) but ultimately underwhelming in comparison to even widely available expressions of the style.
