Riggs Dunkelweizen has a distinct advantage over other dark beers. Just in time for brew day, we had our local maltster custom roast some Riggs-grown wheat. The use of freshly roasted wheat gives this beer a truly unique fresh roast character. This year’s Dunkelweizen has an incredibly smooth “roasty” aroma and flavor up front. Its medium body carries nutty and cocoa flavors nicely. As is typical in wheat beers, Riggs Dunkelweizen has a noticeably “clovey” finish and virtually no hop character.

A: Pours a cloudy reddish/brown color. A dense white head rises to over two fingers with excellent retention. Lace left all the way down the glass.
S: Banana, clove, and spice. With a great malty, nutty, bready aroma. Light chocolate even. Simple, but really well done.
T: Like the nose, banana esters, clove and light spice. The great nutty and bready flavor is there along with some chocolate. A touch of woody flavors come out that remind me a bit of Weihenstephaner. Yep, really like this.
M/O: A medium body with great carbonation. Crisp, clean, ultra smooth and textured. I can drink this all day. Well made and spot on for the style.
The hit this out of the park. Hits all the style points, but more important is that this is something I want to come back to and keep on enjoying. My favorite from the brewery so far.
