Doppelbock is the quintessential strong German Lager. It delivers loads of grain derived complexity; dark toasted bread, notes of figs and raisins, and just a hint of roast. But what makes Doppelbock so special is – in true lager fashion – it finishes dry and incredibly clean. This beer was brewed in traditional German style, without compromise. Double decoction mashing and months of cold lagering give this beer both a depth of character and balance.

Aroma is sweet fruit, caramel malts and a hint of alcohol. The flavor is fruit/mild dark fruit and a caramel/toffee/nutty malt/sweetish/slightly dry finish.

Pours a dark brown, nice sized tan head. Aroma is rich, dark cereal, sweet. Flavor is also rich, sweet and salty, dark heavy cereal, notes of soft pretzels. Good body and feel.

Crimson topaz tone, ample foam, bright clarity. Chocolate covered banana, toasted dark bread crust aromas. Dried fig and clove flavors, big toasted malt flavor, caramelized sugars and melanoidins galore. Big and chewy, bittersweet and finishing. Very good stuff. Thanks to Bill for this one!

Pours a nice fizzy frothy 1 finger off-white head with med retention, spotty lacing, semi hazy semi clear but dark mahogany copper auburn color
Nose is quite nice, lots of caramelized Maillard sugars, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, etc, but not overly syrupy, plenty of fruity esters both malt and yeast derived, some cherry interestingly, plum, even cranberry notes, a little date and pear, a bit of biscuity malt and toasted bread crust
Taste brings more sweet malts, more Maillard flavors with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, again not syrupy, with med overall sweetness and a little perfumey smooth alcohol, then again loads of fruity esters and again malt and yeast derived, that cherry and plum up front, some fig, med-lighter bitterness with some spicy hop notes kicking in late, med sticky sweet finish but not too sticky, touch of alcohol and med bitterness, and some spices from the alcohol
Mouth is med to fuller bod, a bit rich, med-higher frothy carb, a touch of warming alcohol
Overall nicely done Doppelbock, love to get well made beers like this as they can be so enjoyable sipping on cold rainy nights (or afternoons)

A: Pours a dark reddish, nearly brown color. A two finger beige head forms and sticks around a minute. Once that recedes, light lace is left behind.
S: Candied and caramelized malts. Candied apples, fresh baked and toasted bread. A big full malt aroma that I really enjoy.
T: Follows the nose, with a candied/caramelized sweetness. That candied apple is interesting. As this starts to become cloying, a more nuanced malt character comes out. Like baked bread and toasted malts. Again, really enjoyable.
M/O: A full body with moderate carbonation. That is still crisp, but also ultra smooth at the same time. The sweetness does take over after a little bit, but still a very nice sipper.
Like all of Riggs' traditional German styles, this is a great example o the style. It boarders on to much cloying sweetness, but the nuanced malt character comes out more as this breaths and warms. As such, it becomes much more enjoyable with each sip. Well done.
