Maibock is a German springtime lager. First off, it should be noted that this is a strong lager. Don’t let its golden color fool you…. this is a 7.5% beer. It has a floral aroma and honey-like malt backbone. A gentle, warming alcohol character is the foundation of this beer. In true German Lager fashion, it has a crisp finish. Celebrate the coming of spring like the Germans…. have a Maibock.

Poured from 16-ounce can into a crystal mug and poked with a red-hot iron. Clear amber colored body, with a thick white head that was enhanced by the release of carbonation from the poking. Malt forward on the nose and palate, with heavy notes of caramel. The sweetness and smoothness were also enhanced by the poking, which caramelized the sugars in the beer. Fun experiment that yielded a very tasty result.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a two finger head; good persistence and a few shards, clumps and speckles of lace
Smell: Honey and cracker tones mix with melon and herbal tones
Taste: Melon flavors join with a slightly herbal quality that builds from start to a more powerful finish; underneath, there is a consistent honey and cracker malt base
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation
Overall: I have had mixed experiences with Maibocks as too many of them lean toward the malt side of the equation; this one, where the hops make a statement, makes a very positive impression
Smell: Thanks, falloutsnow, for the opportunity
