Returning to my cellar, I chose this beer to review: Cirque Distraction. I know the beer has been in the basement for a few years. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 48 degrees. The pour created a creamy, foamy, half-fingered, dark tan head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The beer is inky black with dark brown hues, charting at SRM 36, and opaque. The appearance of the beer is below average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I smell vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso, treacle, caramel, figs, raisins, floral, earthy dirt, and dark roasted malts. Smelling the beer again, I notice dark roasted malts, light char, and bready.
The flavors begin with dark chocolate, espresso, molasses, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, figs, raisins, floral, earthy dirt, dark roasted malts, and bready. Sipping the glass again, I dark Karo syrup, lightly toasted malts, light char, and a hint of Maillard.
The mouthfeel is chewy, finishing velvety smooth. The body is heavy and has low carbonation.
Cirque Distraction is a sweeter stout with a massive malt complex. The Cocoa and Coffee balance out, and the beer has a lovely harmony. Overall, it is a wonderful stout with a robust flavor profile, making for a lovely finish to a long day.
