£ 4.85/500 mL bottle on ferry from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, to Wemyss Bay. In cooler on boat but consumed from a plastic glass.
Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Red-amber, clear.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, controlled center pour), creamy and off-white, good retention, slowly diminishing to an irregular eight to fifteen mm ring and a thick, complete layer. Head retraction leaves lacing.
Lacing – Excellent. Complete bands of tiny to small bubbles, connected to the next ring by thin columns. Stalactites are present.
First pour – Amber, clear.
Aroma – 3 – Weak, bitter, and a bit fruity.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly bitter with a bit of caramel and a bit of fruit. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 – A very attractive brew but a weak nose. The taste is not bad, just a little bitter with the caramel accentuating the fruit, or perhaps the other way around. The body is a bit thick for an amber ale, but that’s not bad in this case.
