Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown color with a one finger height tan colored head of foam. The head fades rather fast leaving a tiny bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is very heavy of a nice toasted and roasted malt smell that is accompanied by big aromas of chocolate and some vanilla. As one may expect form a peanut butter brew, the peanut butter aroma is intense and combining very nicely with the rest to produce a very roasty peanut butter desert like smell.
Taste – The taste begins with the roastiness that was detected in the nose, showing quite a bit of roasted and toasted malty flavors as well as some coffee and a good bit of milk chocolate. The peanut flavor is very mild upfront and mainly of a dry roasted nut like flavor. As the taste advances however it gets quite a bit stronger. At the same time, the milk chocolate transitions to a more cocoa like flavor, losing a bit of vanilla and creaminess that was upfront with it. All the while, as the peanut butter flavor transitions it takes on a more sugary like peanut butter like taste, and with the rest of the flavors leaves a dark chocolate peanut butter like taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel is a bit on the lighter and thinner side for a porter with a lower carbonation. The low carbonation was great for the dessert like qualities of the brew, but the weak body did not do the flavors justice at all, with a thicker body likely much better accentuating the tastes of the brew.
Overall – Other then the weak mouthfeel, the brew was nicely crafted. Dark, rich, and dessert like, but very approachable.
