It’s time for our second Forgotten Barrel Society bottle release: a kriek-style lambic fermented with Montmorency cherries. This traditional Belgian sour was blended from a variety of barrel-aged coolship beer that was spontaneously fermented during the fall of 2016.
The final barrels were racked by blending various handpicked coolship beers together to balance the cherries’ acidity and sweet fruit flavor. More than 40 pounds of cherries were then added to the barrels to age for eight weeks before being bottled. The bottles aged horizontally for another eight weeks to allow the beer to naturally condition in the bottle for added depth and flavor.
Kriek-style beers are known for a great balance of sweet and tart and our first ever release of this classic style does exactly that. The cherries’ sweet, natural acidity pairs perfectly with the tart base beer, resulting in an easy drinking, inviting lambic with a crisp, light finish.

750ml bottle. The Forgotten Barrel Society March 2018 release.
Clear, deep gold base color with a cherry reddish hint. Brief fizzy head. No lacing.
Aroma of lemon sour, funk yeast, and semi sweet cherry.
Taste is tart, with a coating of funk yeast, and a topping of semi sweet cherry. Quite dry, with the cherry lasting the longest.
Appropriately has a thinner mouth feel, and scrapes a bit. Very good carbonation.
This is to style and a solid brewing project. The last pour of the yeast dregs clouded up the body and really firmed up the yeast expression. Solid but not shining, but I would drink again.
