Clear, dark, mahogany brown pour, looks opaque in the glass; incredibly dense and rich head, creamy texture and sculpted appearance, very long lasting; excellent rings of foam tally each sip of the beer from the glass. Nice, low-key aroma; delicate notes of light chocolate and a suggestion of cherries. The taste starts somewhat weak but soon explodes with rich, dark roasted and charred grain notes; a quiet sense of bourbon builds on the backend and lingers into the finish. Soft and velvety mouthfeel; seems somewhat thin for the style yet there are plenty of residual sugars to coat the palate; some boozy heat offsets the softness and adds a touch of dryness at the finish.

This is a fantastic looking big ABV beer with some nice flavors and subtle aroma. I do wonder what a fresher version might have been like. Perhaps the 2 1/2 to 3 years since its bottling has also added to the softness and melding of the beer's scent and flavor. Anyway, I'm glad to experience this bourbon barrel aged Russian imperial stout. A new beer and brewery for me plus a nice beer to enjoy during this Memorial Day weekend BA RIS online tasting.
